About the Artist Maria DeSimone Prascak Maria’s Ideas Established 1982
Surrounded by creativity in my family, a passion for art was sparked the first time I held a crayon in my hand at age 2. Encouraged by my artistic parents to work hard and follow my dreams, I opened my business at the age of 19 perched on the South Side Slopes at the top of 18th Street where The Mt. Oliver business district begins.
I started my business making custom hand drawn greetings cards signs, illustration work, air brushed t-shirts & clothing, rhinestone jackets & more. After 13 years I had to make the difficult decision to close due to an injury to my hand. I was not sure what to do next - but I had faith that I would figure it out. I rested my hand, kept my phone number and continued to take on small projects that my injured hand would allow. After a couple months, unable to continue airbrushing, I decided to take up painting… BIG.
I learned how to paint on a much larger scale, picked up my brushes and never looked back. I absolutely love painting murals and creating custom art. I have been painting murals full time for the past 23 years and grateful to be celebrating 36 years in business in 2018.
Transforming rooms, creating spaces for residential and commercial clients, and making them happy is quite fulfilling. I work closely with my clients, bringing their ideas to life. Embellishing a home, office, canvas with a trompe l'oeil mural or decorative painting gives my artistic energy a chance to soar!
I am what you would refer to as a multi-disciplinary artist. I’ve been told I must focus on one thing, one medium… my response to that is why? As an artist with ADHD I have learned to use this affliction as some may call it, as an advantage. I can switch gears, paint with the medium of choice, best suited for each project. In the past 36 years as a professional artist, I have been fortunate to have the opportunities to accept many commissions that would have otherwise passed me by if I only created with one medium. I thrive on change and mixing things up, it keeps my art fresh and my creative juices flowing, it works for me.
In addition to painting murals, I accept commissions for CUSTOM Fine ART such as paintings on canvas. I create art using various mediums such as acrylics, watercolors, gouache, pen and ink, pencil, pastels, mixed media and repurposed items. I have also restored statues for churches, home décor items, art and murals. My art is sold online, local art shows and the gift shops at the National Aviary. Inspired by my affection for wildlife and nature, my art has been described as colorful, whimsical and enchanting. I hope it inspires others to look around, to discover the beauty in nature in their world.
Making time to volunteer at The Little Sisters of the Poor-Pittsburgh very important and rewarding. I teach an acrylic painting class, the average age of my students is 80 years old, many have never painted, but they all learn and create beautiful art!
As curator for the art on exhibit and for sale at The Bakery Society Pittsburgh. I have always supported fellow artists, this gives me the opportunity to help artist get exposure and sell their art.
I love to encourage others and hope I inspire them through my art, to get creative, paint, draw, make things with their hands, it is GOOD FOR THE SOUL!
In addition to painting murals, I accept commissions for Fine ART such as paintings on stretched canvas which can be framed or unframed, canvas murals which are applied to walls or ceilings, making them removable. I also paint using watercolors and mixed media. Reproductions and some original art can be purchased online in my etsy shops. Personalized and customized art ~ Great Gifts!
